  • EXA Liquidation – What now for your website?

EXA Liquidation – What now for your website?

    Impacts of EXA Liquidation

Ever since news broke down yesterday about EXA Liquidation, the web has been buzzing with questions about what a company should do if they are in the situation and how they can protect themselves moving forward.

We put a quick checklist yesterday on what you need to do immediately if you are a client of EXA, please click on the link below to view it. In the page there is information on how to make sure your website, your domain and your emails get minimally impacted by EXA’s liquidation or if you have an issue with your Digital Agency and you would like to change Agencies.
    http://www.neton.com.au/2016/02/checklist-for-moving-agencies/

    How to future proof yourself

EXA Liquidation - what does it mean for you

While EXA liquidation came out of nowhere and is a very isolated incident, these things happen all the time in a smaller level. Sometimes you have to part ways with your Digital Agency and sometimes it becomes a sore affair. We at NetON have moved a number of clients to ours after a falling out with their Digital Agency. Most of the time, the previous agency is helpful but every now and then they are not and it’s harder to get all the assets to rebuild the site quickly.

So the second question is how to future proof yourself for the future. Here are some tips to make sure that you can react quickly if this happens again in the future.

    1. Keep a backup of all your assets

This gets thrown around a lot but doesn’t get implemented much. As a company you use a lot of imagery, videos etc on your site. Making sure that you have a copy of all the images locally means that you can rebuild a site really fast.

    2. Make sure your provider has off site backup of your site

This is a very crucial step. Ensuring that you provider has a off site backup means that you can rebuild the site from the backup if there is a crisis. For example, with EXA Liquidation, most of the site information is in their servers which are now pretty much locked.

    3. Use Open Source where possible

Try and use Open source platforms for your websites. WordPress and Drupal are great CMS’s that you can use and in case you need to find another agency, it will be easier to find an agency who can work with Open Source platforms.

    4. Don’t get locked into proprietary CMS platforms

Same point as above but worth mentioning, don’t use a proprietary CMS that only your Digital Agency can work with. This never ends well in our experience.

    5. Manage your own domain

This is a no brainer but time and time again, we see clients letting their agency register the domain. Registering a domain is easy, gives you more control and is way cheaper.  Manage it.

    6. Use Google Apps or Office 365 for emails

Again another no-brainer, please use an email provider that is not your Digital Agency for your emails. This way changing providers is not a pain.

    7. Use an Agency that doesn’t try to lock you in

Try and use a Digital Agency that doesn’t try and lock you into hefty contracts. If you are not an enterprise, boutique agencies work just as well as a high profile agency. They will be faster, cheaper and more attentive to your needs.

  • Checklist for Moving Agencies

    Checklist for Moving Agencies

Has your current Digital Agency gone into Liquidation? What to do next.

Ever since EXA went into liquidation this morning, companies in Australia have to now cater for this unlikely event with their websites. What happens if your Web Design Agency goes into Liquidation?

    looking-in-the-dark

When a company goes into liquidation in Australia, the company is effectively closed and the assets liquidated. If you have your site hosted with a company which has gone into liquidation, this essentially means that your site will close down at some point. Usually data centers are paid for in a month in advance so you are likely to have your site for until the end of the month.

Here is a quick step by step checklist to make sure you can move properly to a new agency.

    Scrape your current website

Since your agency is liquidated, you may not be able to get a hold of the staff. It might be impossible to get access to your files, so you need to scrape the static content of the sites.  Usually this is a technical thing to do, so best to assign this to an IT person or a digital agency.

Get admin access to the site backend or access to the files

Get in touch with your account manager/producer ASAP and try to get access to the backend or access to the files. Were there any past backups? Do you have access to them? Past backups or backend access works best to recover your website.

    Get access to domain

This is also a crucial step, if your current agency registered your domain name, you need access to that ASAP. Reach out to your Account Manager for access to domain. We at NetON prefer our clients handle domains themselves for this reason.  If you can’t reach out to any of the staff, you can also reach out to the registrar (eg CrazyDomains, NetRegistry, Melbourne IT) to get access to your domain name.

    Back up your emails

If your emails are hosted with your current agency, you need to backup your emails ASAP. If your emails are hosted with Office 365 or Google Apps, then you don’t need to do this step.

Get a new Agency to setup your website

Get whatever asset you have (static scraped website) or access to files, get another agency to setup your website on a new host. This will mean that you are safe from the site going down.

  • Magento Commerce 2.0 released–What’s new?

    Magento Commerce 2.0 released–What’s new?

Magento 2.0 delivers a revolutionary update to both of their finest products on the market, both Community and Enterprise Edition are improved vastly since the last variant. Here we’ll show you what has change since.

    Features

    • Compatibility

    • Concept of View

    • JQuery Library

    • New Performance

    • Component Oriented Architecture

    • Directories Structure

    • Automated Testing

    • Better Security

    • Class Alias

    • RDBMS Tabular Structure

    • ORM

    • Service Contracts

    Compatibility

Magento 2.0 will use PHP 5.3 and Zend Framwork for managing performances of cache engine, database access layer and translations. Coincidentally, it supports MSSQL and Oracle that is great for Windows Platform Server.

    Concept of View

In Magento 2.0, the sheer complexity and overall development time is considerably reduced due to the novel design of concept of the view in the module, which is the replacement of the existing base design package that enables developers to create working view with minimal effort as they don’t have to define the configuration file, because it is possible to create the view instead. Replacement of base directory and integration of view into the whole system are two major changes in Magento 2.0.

    JQuery Library

Jquery is the most popular lightweight to use JavaScript Library. In Magento 2.0, jQuery library is the default JavaScript library. The migration from prototype to Jquery is one of the most important changes for frontend developers in Magento 2.0 as the prototype.js was used as a base javascript framework in its previous version because of the instability that entails.

Support from Magento 2.0 is only valid for one Javascript framework which means that there will be less Javascript conflicts in 2.0 than in 1.x. Yet another major plus for developers.

    New Performance

Performance used to be an issue for Magento. A powerhouse with an unquenchable thirst for resources and marginally less efficient than other solutions, but everything changes with the latest installment. Magento 2.0 is at least 20% faster than the latest Magento 1.x. This change in overall performance is vastly noticeable.

    Component Oriented Architecture

Modules such as customer, catalog, checkout, sales, CMS and others exist as components and interact between each other with high code coupling. Should a certain module deem obsolete, it can be disabled or replaced with the developers’ choice of module. It’s not necessary to install the entire system and hack the existing code base to customize and tweak Magento 2.0, thus site performance increases significantly.

    Directories Structure

Magento 2.0 ushers two major overhaul in its file structure. First and foremost, everything is placed directly under the app structure. Secondly, every module has its own VIEW directory in which you can access all template, layout, js, and css/less files of any specific module. This undoubtedly serve as a monumental milestone for module developers as they can have more opportunities for customization without changing core site functionality.

There are four types of directories in Magento 2 file system:

    • Primary directories

    • System directories

    • Application directories

    • Public directories

    Automated Testing

Developers are now able to construct autonomous testing regime. It includes a flawless testing framework designed to perform: Static Tests, Performance Tests, Unit Tests, Legacy and Migration Tests, Integration Tests and JavaScript Unit Tests.

    Better Security

In lieu of changes to directory structure, Magento 2 is now more secure than ever. There is a new directory – ‘pub’, which enables developers to protect the code from different security breaches. They have taken some new steps in handling server validation. It will ensure greater security, so the online store will be much safer.

The latest version includes an automatic installer that can check upgrade requirements, and will verify that you have all the additional components needed for flawless operation with your upgrade. And of course, an easy-to-use import/export tool will make it easy to switch over to Magento 2 and future upgrades. Whereas upgrading used to be a dull task, it’s rather smooth sailing with version 2.0.

    Class Alias

Class Alias has been removed. Only Class name needs to be place in the mage class design pattern method.

    RDBMS Tabular Structure

New sections are converted into typical RDBMS tabular structure in Magento 2.0. There are plans to provide NoSQL adapter, so the removing of EAV is inevitable, but in Magento 2.0 it will get improved performance

    ORM

There is a possibility than Magento 2.0 will get a new ORM.

    Service Contracts

Service Contracts is another important feature of Magento 2, which is based on a set of different PHP Interfaces. The feature improves and simplifies the use of APIs for various modules. With Service Contracts, developers will get a new way of working with public API endpoints.

    Front-end Architecture

Magento 2.0 frontend engine is aligned with modern protocols, and uses HTML5, CSS3 technologies. The Prototype library was replaced by jQuery along with Jquery UI. They have Magento UI library which is based on LESS, it contains a solid set of mixins, and a large set of variables that allows you to make the development process more intuitive and flexible.

Opting LESS based on the fact that Magento 2 comes with an internal compiler, that allows the developer to focus on the development process. The LESS compilation could be a server-side using LESS PHP library, or client-side that uses less.js library.

Note that Magento 2.0 used RequireJS, which significantly increases the pages loading speed. RequireJS is an implementation of AMD (Asynchronous Module Definition) technology, it is an API for declaring modules and their asynchronous loading at a moment when they are needed. This avoids adding JS-script libraries in the head, in the “lazy” loading way.

    Back-end point of view:

    • PHP 5.5, Zend Framework 1.x

    • MySQL, Oracle and MSSQL databases support

    • jQuery + plugin orientated framework

    • Improved SOAP, XML-RPC, JSON-RPC, REST and other APIs

    • Unlimited theme inheritance

    • New validator library

    Key Updates

    • New Technologies

    • Improved Customization Process

    • Easier Frontend Development

    • Reduced Upgrade Cost and Effort

    • Improved Scalability and Performance

    • New Documentation and Testing resources

    • Better Engagement with Community

    New Technologies

The new technology stack includes the latest versions of PHP, JQuery, CSS3, etc.

    Magento 1.x technology stack

    Sass/Compass

    jQuery in rwd package only

    Prototype Javascript livrary in core

    Additional Javascript libraries

      Magento 2.0 technology stack

      • HTML5
      • CSS3
      • RequireJS
      • Apache 2.2 or later
      • PHP 5.5.x with PHP 5.4.11
      • MySQL 5.6
      • PSR Compliance
      • Install needed components via Composer
      • Magento UI Library
      • CSS Pre-processor
      • Full page caching
      • Magento Performance toolkit

With JQuery Magento 2 is more accessible, as a result, developers are able to use a JavaScript libraries they already well-versed in. The supports for additional plugins is provided as well.

      • Magento 2 is fully responsive and based on HTML5. Customers get a great shopping experience on every device, and developers are able to use powerful APIs and features from HTML5.

      • CSS3 improves page load speed of Magento 2. It also provides a myriad of new visual effects: reflections, multiple backgrounds, shadows, and so on.

      • Another great feature of Magento 2 is a RequireJS library. It aids in loading JS resources asynchronously. As a result it improves page load time and encourage modular design for front end components.

      • The second Magento also supports PHP 5.5 (5.4.11 is the minimum requirement). Ultimately, Magento 2 provides better overall performance.

      WORDPRESS END-USERS

      Classic Default Theme TwentySixteen

Twenty Sixteen features a standard blog layout, with a horizontal header and menu across the top, and a sidebar on the right. It was built with a mobile first approach, so it’s responsive and looks great on devices of all sizes. A fluid grid design, flexible header, fun color schemes, and more, will all make your content shine. Other notable features include:

      • Larger Image sizes

      • Custom color options

      • Custom post intros and excerpts

      • 2 widget areas at the bottom of posts and pages

      • Pull quotes

      Responsive Images

The trending framework for websites nowadays is large images, and it poses a great deal on the page loading speed which most users would frown upon. With the latest update, it support for improved image handling attributes and the srcset tag, which defines available sizes for a given image. So that users don’t have to rely on plugins which coincidentally increase the load to obtain equivalent functionality.

A vital rule of thumb in responsive Web design methodology is that Websites are responsive to the size and bandwidth capabilities of an end-user device or browser. This is an inherent trait as WordPress already automatically creates multiple sizes of each image that a user uploads into a site’s media library as stated by WordPress developer Joe McGill.

      Expanded Embedded Capacity

To embed content, the usual manner to do so is using a plugin that recognizes URL and connect to external service and ask for the relevant HTML code to embed the content into the page or post. Fortunately the new update allows content to be seamlessly embedded into posts or pages with just a simply drag and drop of URLs into the WordPress Editor. It’s called oEmbed, and they’re expanding that capability to allow embedding from almost any source.

      C:\Users\Jack\Desktop\Embed.png

You can now embed WordPress posts on any sites just like Tweets or Youtube videos, using URLs or a snippet of code will work wonders. Embedded posts will display a title, excerpt and featured image, as well as a site icon and links for comments and sharing.

Further enhancements to embedding comes in the form of support for five new oEmbed providers: Cloudup, Reddit Comments, ReverbNation, Speaker Deck, and VideoPress

      DEVELOPERS

      REST API Infrastructure

The REST API is a specific API that was designed to get information to and fro WordPress from a variety of sources. It’s fairly novel, and was designed with modern approaches to browsers and mobile devices. It helps developers to access data in a standardized, interoperable manner which may be one of the most highly-anticipated WordPress features ever. Allowing them to build and extend RESTful APIs on top of WordPress.

The infrastructure is the first part of a multi-stage rollout for the REST API. Inclusion of core endpoints is targeted for an upcoming release. Once those endpoints are available, WordPress developers will be able to use WordPress as an application back-end without any additional plugins. That will give them the opportunity to implement their own front-ends using whatever technologies they so chooses. Integrating this API certainly make life easier for theme and plugin designers.

      Term Metadata Inclusion

Metadata provides information about other data. Terms are individual objects within a taxonomy where the category taxonomy can have many terms. Taxonomy is a classification format to which it’s not a category or tag, but gets its context from the term taxonomy table.

WordPress has long allowed for meta on other types of objects, such as:

      • Posts

      • Comments

      • Users

Metadata is important as it allows plugins and the core itself to add extra data to the various objects that’s not accounted for in the main table. A prime example of this would be featured images in core that stores the image ID as metadata because there’s no field for the image ID in the posts table.

New meta wrapper functions for terms:

      • add_term_meta()

      • update_term_meta()

      • delete_term_meta()

      • get_term_meta()

All of these can be quite a mouthful, basically it enables you to arrange, manage data and content with ease, they can be color-coded for intuitive design use.

      Efficient Comment Classes

      Comment query improvements
      • Comment queries now have cache handling to improve performance. New arguments in WP_Comment_Query make crafting robust comment queries simpler.

      Term, comment, and network objects
      • New WP_Term, WP_Comment, and WP_Network objects make interacting with terms, comments, and networks more predictable and intuitive in code.
